Sheepshead Fishing in Murrells Inlet

How to Spot One. How to Catch One. Why They’re a Favorite.

If you’ve ever pulled up a fish with black-and-white stripes and teeth that look suspiciously human – you’ve met a sheepshead.

These sneaky, structure-loving fish are one of the most recognizable and rewarding species to catch in Murrells Inlet. They hang tight to jetties, pilings, and oyster beds — and put up a strong fight for their size.

Let’s break down why these fish are so popular with local anglers and visiting families alike.

How to Identify a Sheepshead

  • Color: Silver body with bold, vertical black stripes (aka “convict fish”).
  • Size: Average 12–20 inches, but we often see them bigger during peak season.
  • Shape: Flat and tall-bodied — built like a brawler.
  • Teeth: Yep, those are real. Sheepshead have thick, human-like teeth for crushing crabs and barnacles.

Hint: If the fish has a mug only a dentist could love, it’s probably a sheepshead.

Where to Find Them Around Murrells Inlet

These guys are masters of hiding — so we go to them.

  • Rock jetties
  • Dock pilings
  • Oyster beds
  • Nearshore reefs

Sheepshead love structure and are notorious bait stealers, so you need good technique and a sharp eye. Luckily, our captains know all the honey holes.

What They Eat (And What We Use to Catch Them)

Sheepshead love crunchy things:

  • Fiddler crabs
  • Shrimp
  • Barnacles
  • Sand fleas

We typically use small hooks, light leader, and just enough weight to get near the structure. Once they bite — set the hook fast and hold on.

Why Anglers Love Them

  • Challenging and fun to catch
  • Excellent eating — firm white meat, mild flavor
  • Family-friendly (especially when they’re thick around the jetties)
  • Bite all year, with stronger runs in cooler months

Whether you’re an experienced angler or just want to see your kid reel in something with stripes and a smile, sheepshead are always a favorite on our charters.
